Smart Lock Installation

Arthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.

In plain words

Our winters shape how a smart lock should be fitted. Cold drains batteries sooner, so the locksmith fits the maker's specified battery type, sets the low-battery alert to reach a checked phone, and shows how a fresh set goes in with gloves on. Meltwater that refreezes overnight can bind a bolt, so the strike is set to give the motor clearance. A storm door that traps summer heat, or a keypad facing driving snow, steers the choice of model and finish. Fitted this way, a smart lock is set up to perform through the cold months, even though batteries and materials still work harder in deep winter than in June.

The call
The deadbolt is a stiff double-cylinder model that needs a key from both sides, and in the dark hallway finding it is a nuisance. You want a thumb-turn inside, a keypad outside, and a door that locks itself behind you.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Measuring the door and its holes

Smart locks are built around the standard residential preparation, so the locksmith measures before choosing. Door thickness is usually between 35 and 45 millimetres; thicker doors need an extension kit and very thin ones may need a different model. The large cross bore for the cylinder, the smaller edge bore for the bolt and the backset from the door edge to the centre of the hole are each checked against the new lock's range. A lever set also needs the handing confirmed. Steel and fibreglass doors, doors with a mortise pocket from an older lock, and doors with glass close to the handle each change what will fit and how it is mounted.

  2. Scene 2

Testing everything before the van door closes

The last stretch of the visit is all testing, with the door closed as in daily life. Each code is entered and the bolt watched all the way home. The app locks and unlocks the door while the phone sits at the far end of the house, and again from outside the property if the lock is online. The override key is tried in the rekeyed cylinder. The auto-lock is timed. If the model has an emergency power contact, a nine-volt battery is touched to it to prove that route. The storm door is closed to make sure nothing fouls the exterior housing. When every route in and out has behaved, the job is done.

  3. Scene 3

Codes you can give and take back

The lock now belongs to your account, and the day-to-day control is yours. Adding a code for a new cleaner, setting a weekend window for a visiting relative or removing the dog walker who moved away is done from the app or the keypad in moments, without a locksmith and without cutting anything. A short list of who holds which code, kept somewhere private, is worth writing on day one so the door's access stays as tidy as it is today. Codes should be unique per person and never shared aloud on the step; where the lock offers one-time or scheduled codes, use them for trades and deliveries and let them expire.

  • Hole saw, spade bit and drilling jig
  • Thick-door extension kit
  • Hinge shims and long hinge screws
  • Dry PTFE lubricant

What shapes the quoteLeaside Lock Experts

Storm door and weather adjustments
Where the entrance calls for a vented storm door panel, a keypad shield or a model rated for heat and cold exposure, those items are named separately so you can choose them or not.
Travel and access to the property
Distance to the address and how easy the door is to reach, such as a condo with a locked lobby or a rural property at the end of a long drive, are part of any call-out.
Number of doors
A single front door is the base case. Adding the back door, the garage entry or a side door, whether each gets its own smart lock or is rekeyed to match the override key, extends the visit accordingly.

Ask us anything about locks

Will the new lock match my existing door hardware?

Smart locks come in the same finish families as ordinary hardware: satin nickel, matte black, aged bronze, polished brass and chrome. The locksmith matches the finish to your handle set, or swaps the handle at the same time so the door reads as one piece. Where an old finish has weathered to a shade no new part will match, replacing the knob or lever alongside the deadbolt is the tidy answer, and the two are often sold as a matching pair.

Can the back door and garage door be put on the same system?

Yes, in one of two ways. Each door can get its own smart lock, all managed from the same app and account, with the same codes working at every door. Or, where the cylinders share a compatible keyway, the other doors can stay mechanical and be rekeyed so a single key operates them and the smart lock's override cylinder alike. Many households do the front door first and add the others later; the account and the codes carry across.

Do I need a hub or a bridge?

Only if the model you choose uses one to reach the internet. Some locks have Wi-Fi built into the interior unit and connect straight to your router. Others save battery by using Bluetooth at the door and a small plug-in bridge nearby to relay to the network. Locks designed for a home hub join whatever hub you already run. The locksmith checks signal strength at the door itself and recommends the arrangement that keeps the lock reliably connected.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.
