Meet the locksmiths

When someone asks us about high security locks, we start at the door and not at the catalogue. How far does the bolt travel, what is it entering, how long are the strike screws, is there glass within reach of the turn, and how many keys are out there? The answers decide whether the right step is a rated cylinder, a heavier deadbolt, a reinforced frame or all three.

Shop rules

Locks for the house you actually live in.

  1. A look before a verdict. We inspect the door, frame and lock before suggesting anything. Diagnosing from the driveway is how people end up with parts they did not need.
  2. Two or three real choices. Where there are sensible alternatives we explain them side by side, including the option of doing less than you expected.
  3. The job finished properly. Tested, aligned, cleaned up and demonstrated. We do not consider a lock done until you have turned the key yourself.
  4. Open 24/7, same fees any hour. Send a photo of the lock.

High Security Locks

ScaleNot to scale

Getting past an ordinary lock is a skill many people have. Getting past a high security lock is loud, slow and uncertain, which is exactly the point. The services here make your door the one an intruder decides is not worth it.

  1. Layer 1The key

    High Security Locks

You run a home office with client files and equipment, and your insurer has asked what kind of lock is on the door. The honest answer is the builder's knob lock and a light deadbolt from when the house was new.

  2. Layer 2The cylinder

    Lock Replacement & Upgrade

The keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.

  3. Layer 3The bolt and strike

    Deadbolt Installation

You moved in three weeks ago. The previous owner left a handful of keys, none labelled, and the bolt on the side door rattles in its housing.

  4. Layer 4The door and frame

    Break-In Damage Lock Repair

There is a hole where the cylinder used to be. Somebody twisted it out of the deadbolt with a wrench, and now the empty bore looks straight through to the kitchen, with the bolt still stuck in the frame.

Safes

Safe Opening & Combination Change

A safe opening and combination change service is built around confirming who has the right to be inside the safe before any tool touches it. Once that is settled, the locksmith identifies the safe's make, model and lock type, then works…

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 58 in 100 homes · older homes
  • About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Decades of seasons move a frame, and an older house often has a front door that locks easily in summer and fights in winter. Setting the strike with the seasons in mind, and choosing a lubricant that stays fluid in the cold, keeps it working year round.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.

Ask us anything about locks

Can the same visit replace locks on more than one door, or does each door need its own appointment?

One visit usually covers every door on the job. The locksmith brings a range of cylinders and strikes, measures each door's backset and bore, and works through the list in order, front entrance first if a key change matters most there. Having a rough list ready, which doors, and whether they should end up on one key or several, lets the locksmith plan hardware before arriving rather than working it out door by door on site.

What does a higher grade of lock actually give me?

Grades follow ANSI/BHMA standards, with Grade 1 the highest and Grade 3 the lightest, and residential hardware carries a separate label that scores security, durability and finish. The grade reports how the lock performed on the standard's own operational, strength and security tests; a higher grade often comes with a longer bolt, a sturdier housing, pins that resist picking and a strike built to anchor into the framing, but those features are worth confirming on the specific model rather than assumed from the grade alone.

My old house has a mortise lock. Can it take modern hardware?

Often the original case can be kept and given a new cylinder and strike, which keeps the period look and the old door intact. Where the case is beyond service, a filler or conversion plate covers the mortise pocket and lets a cylindrical deadbolt or knob set be fitted without cutting into the door's stile. The locksmith looks at the door before recommending either path, since old doors vary a great deal.

What are the hardware grades I see on the packaging?

Locks and deadbolts are tested against industry standards for security, durability and finish. Commercial hardware is graded 1, 2 or 3 with grade 1 the highest. Residential hardware carries a letter label for each of the three categories, from C for good through B to A for the top level. Security tests include hammer blows and pulling on the lock; durability covers cycle life and seasonal misalignment; finish covers salt, humidity and scratching. Your locksmith translates the label for your door.
